Why do several MFT careers share one occupation code?
Several MFT careers share one occupation code because the federal classification counts licenses and job titles, not specialties. A couples therapist, a family therapist and a generalist marriage and family therapist all hold the same license and are counted together under SOC 21-1013, which is why they share a wage figure.
That is worth knowing when you read salary data anywhere, including here. A page promising you what couples therapists specifically earn is either quoting the MFT figure with a different label on it, or using a survey of its own that it should be naming. The differences between these roles are real, but they show up in setting, clientele and how you are paid rather than in a separate federal number.
How should you choose between these MFT careers?
Choose between these careers on the room you want to be in, because that is the decision the license leaves open and the one hardest to reverse later. Couples work, family and child work, and integrated medical work draw on the same training and feel almost nothing alike day to day.
You do not have to decide before you apply, and mostly you should not. What is worth doing early is noticing which of these a program is actually set up to prepare you for: where its practicum placements are, which models it teaches, and whether its graduates go into agencies or into private practice. What qualifications do MFT careers require?
MFT careers require a master's degree, a period of supervised clinical hours and a state license, in that order, for every clinical role on this page. There are 98 accredited master's programs in marriage and family therapy nationally and 27 doctoral programs for the teaching, research and supervision routes.
The part that catches people out is not the degree but what follows it. Plan for roughly two further years of supervised practice at associate pay, and choose a program partly on how much help it gives you securing the placements those hours come from.
